Antique Staddle Stones

A pair of 18thC English Staddle Stones with excellent colour and weathering.

Instantly recognisable and often erroneously called mushroom stones , Staddle stones have been used for centuries as the raised footings for granaries and tithe barns in order to prevent both damp and rats and mice raiding the stores. Generally found in the southern counties, Staddlestones can be found in a number of mediums, most commonly bathstone, sandstone and granite, they will vary region by region and will these days be seen gracing rural driveways and gardens.
